Sarah J. Smith Thompson Garnet

Sarah J. Smith Thompson Garnet was the first Black woman in New York City to be named as a principal. She served as a teacher and principal for almost 40 years. She organized the only black Equal Suffrage League in Brooklyn, and was involved in the Women’s Loyal Union, honoring the work of Ida B. Wells. She was also a member of the National Association of Colored Women.
